Restored Executive must harness new walking opportunities for South Down says Chris Hazzard

South Down Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard MP has said that a restored Stormont Executive must prioritise the development and delivery of long-distance walking routes throughout South Down and further afield.

The South Down MP was discussing progress on the ‘Columban Way’ with the Friends of Columbanus alongside First Minister Designate, Michelle O’Neill MLA at the St Patrick Centre in Downpatrick.

Chris Hazzard MP welcomed First Minister Designate Michelle O’Neill MLA to Downpatrick and said that the Stormont Executive needs to be restored for projects such as the Columban Way to move forward.

“It was great to have our First Minister Designate Michelle O’Neill MLA in Downpatrick to meet with, and endorse the positive and very commendable work that has been done thus far to nurture the concept of a Columban Way walking trail.

“The ‘Columban Way’ would not only be a fantastic addition to the local tourism and hospitality industry, it would be a hugely significant investment in safe, off-road walking infrastructure in our local communities.

“Clearly benefits of delivering such a project are undeniable, but so is too, the need for an Executive to be formed to allow work to advance.

“Now is the time for both local and central government to work together with ‘Friends of Columbanus’ to deliver the necessary investment, buy into the project and bring this concept to life for the local community.

“Sinn Féin are ready and determined to lead that Executive and prioritise this important piece of work,” said Chris Hazzard.
