Hazzard Meets SERC to Discuss Introduction of Maritime Courses

SOUTH Down Sinn Féin Assemblyman Chris Hazzard has met with senior officials at South Eastern Regional College (SERC) to discuss the possibility of introducing maritime and fishing training courses at the Downpatrick Campus.

Mr Hazzard added: “Following a recent meeting with members of the fishing industry in Ardglass, I have been working with them to address some key issues such as the absence of a professional training course run locally to attract and retain people interested in a career in the fishing industry.

“There is huge potential for growth in the local fishing industry and it is vital that we explore ways to not only professionalise the industry, but to enhance and expand it. Our local harbours at Kilkeel, Ardglass, and Portavogie are becoming increasingly busy and it’s critical that we put in place sustainable structures for future success.

“Having met with SERC officials over the last few months I have been hugely impressed by their professionalism and commitment to providing a first-class educative experience. It is with this in mind I feel they are uniquely equipped to provide this much needed training for our rapidly expanding local fishing industry.

“We are still at an early stage in the process, but I am encouraged by the commitment from all involved, and I look forward to working with SERC and the various departments in the months ahead.”
