South Down MP Chris Hazzard says energy firms must be curtailed
Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard has said the British government should ‘call time’ on big energy companies and ensure they pay their way.xa0
The South Down MP said: “Sinn Féin have repeatedly told the British government that they must act to support workers and families through the cost-of-living crisis as they struggle to pay their bills.xa0
“They should start by calling time on big energy companies whose profits are through the roof and they should ensure they pay their way and aren’t ripping off ordinary people.xa0
“Executive departments need more money to deal with the rise in inflation and the huge spike in living costs. The British government must step up and provide more money to ensure that can happen.
“With increasing numbers of families facing a bleak winter, the British government should stop giving cover to the DUP Executive boycott so that the £435 million sitting in a Stormont bank account can be spent helping ordinary workers and families.
“It is quite incredulous to listen to Tory leadership candidates talk about the action needed to tackle the rising cost of living. Which in some instances would be u-turns on things they themselves have implemented when they’ve sat on their hands for months.
“Regardless of who becomes the next British Prime Minister, people are facing a difficult autumn and winter and we need to see action and not empty promises.”
“Workers and families are struggling, they rightly expect the government to be there to support them.”
