Newry Mourne and Down Council Chair Marks Newry Samaritans Golden Anniversary

The sterling work of the Newry Samaritans has been recognised as they celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Valerie Harte, has hosted a Civic Reception to mark 50 years of the Samaritans’ invaluable outreach work in Newry.

Formed in 1973 and located in Marcus Square Newry, the services of the Samaritans have been a lifeline for countless individuals in our community who have faced emotional distress, despair and loneliness. 

Council Chairperson, Councillor Valarie Harte, expressed her gratitude to the Samaritans during the reception on Tuesday 4 July, at Council Offices in Monaghan Row.

Cllr Harte said: “It is an honour and a privilege to be able to host tonight’s Civic Reception to mark the 50th Anniversary of the outstanding commitment of the Newry Samaritans branch.

The Chairperson Newry, Mourne and Down Council, Councillor Valerie Harte, hosted a Council reception to celebrate the work of the Samaritans Newry Branch during their 50th Anniversary Year. Councillor Geraldine Kearns also attended and Chairperson Councillor Valerie Harte presented them with a crystal inscribed bowl in recognition of their much needed and vital service to the community.

“I want to acknowledge and thank all the dedicated volunteers, who have selflessly devoted time and energy to people 24/7 – 365 days a year, to offer compassion, empathy and emotional support to anyone who is struggling to cope or who needs a listening ear.

“Their unwavering commitment to offering confidential, non-judgemental support has provided solace and comfort to those who need it most, saving lives and bringing light in the darkest moments.

“The services which the Samaritans provide are invaluable and impact on the lives of so many in such a positive manner.

“They have provide a lifeline for countless individuals in our local community who experiencing or have experienced deep emotional distress or suicidal thoughts.

Council Chairperson Councillor Valerie Harte presents Samaritans Newry Branch Director Oonagh Brown with an inscribed crystal bowl in recognition of their 50 years service to the community.

“It is essential that we continue to support the vital work that you and all third sector organisations provide across our district.”

Newry Samaritans President, Oonagh Brown said: “Newry Samaritans have been answering calls for help for the last 50 years, reaching out to people who are in crisis or are having difficulty coping.

“We hope to continue to ensure that when our callers hear the words ‘Samaritans, can we help you?’ and know that they are not alone.

“The work of the Samaritans can only continue thanks to the dedication of our volunteers. If you think you could help, please consider volunteering with us.”

The Chairperson concluded the evening by presenting the president of Newry Samaritans branch, Oonagh Brown with an engraved crystal bowl.
