Glasdrumman GAC Notes For 7 July 2014

Glasdrumman U-10’s had a busy week with two Mourne league games and their own club tournament.

With only two league games left they had a chance to finish joint top but, unfortunately, Longstone put paid to that when they proved too strong on the night and ran out worthy winners writes Tony Bannon.

On Thursday night the U-10’s played at home to An Riocht who themselves were still in with a chance of league honours.  In a pulsating game of football it was Glasdrumman who came out winners of this one by one point.  This was one of the best performances this young team has put in this season with every player playing their hearts out from goalie Peter Doran, backs Aoife McComb, Darragh Rooney and Cáolam Smith, mid-fielders Jack McVeigh, Cormac McComb and forwards Ollie Thompson, Sean Kelly and Niall McCartan.  So it was a question of what might have been with these youngsters who showed at times in the league campaign, a little bit more belief in themselves they could achieve more.

The seconds’ game this week saw two very entertaining games of football as usual.  There was also great football from big Sé Ronney, pocket rocket Georgie Thompson, wee Ryan “better than me da” McCartan, young “Rolls” Connor McClelland and “one to follow in auntie Caroline’s boots” Ellie Cunningham.

On Saturday  5 July 2014 Glasdrumman GAC held their Annual Summer U-10 Gaelic Football tournament in St Mary’s Park Glasdrumman and a great success it turned out to be.   The sun shone high as teams from Ballymartin, Attical, Bryansford, Kilcoo, Loughinisland, Longstone, Drumgath, Annaclone and hosts Glasdrumman battled it out to qualify for the finals of the Cup, Shield and Plate.

First final, up was the Plate final which saw Attical victorious against a gallant Ballymartin team.  Next was Glasdrumman and Annaclone for the Shield final.  This was a chance for the young Glasdrummans to put behind the disappointment of not winning the league earlier on in the week and what a great performance they put in.  It was Glasdrumman who went in leading at half time by three points thanks to an opportunist goal  from Ollie Thompson right on the whistle.  The second half saw a very determined Glasdrumman making sure this one didn’t get away.  Credit to Annalclone, they just couldn’t find a way past.

With a back line of Aoife McComb and the excellent and outstanding duo of Cáolam Smith and Darragh Rooney, nothing was going to get by them.  In mid-field, Jack McVeigh and Cormac McComb who were winning good ball making sure that there was plenty of supply to the forward line.  Ollie Thompson set up Niall McCartan for a great point before the impressive Sean Kelly sealed the game with his customary well taken goal.

Mention to goal keeper Peter Doran with his excellent handling and duistribution  of ball in previous games as well as the final.  Well done skippy!  Although there were no subs used in the final well done to Georgie Thompson, Ellie Cunningham, Ryan McCartan and Sé Rooney who all played their part in previous games.

In the cup final, it was cut throat between Kilcoo and Longstone.  It was anybodys game till the final whistle blew.  Longstone came out victorious so well done.

To top the day off, afterwards prizes were kindly presented to the teams by county player Benny Coulter so many thanks for that.  A Big Thank you also to Terry and Gerard for doing a great job as referees and to all those who supplied and made refreshments especially to our very own Gordon Ramsay ( without the temper and colourful language)  Ramsay aka Paul Thompson.
