The world famous Red Arrows will make a welcome return visit to the skies over Newcastle on Saturday 9 August, trailing clouds of coloured smoke and glory, headlining the biggest ever B/E Aerospace Festival of Flight.
Looking forward to the excitement, Councillor William Walker, Chairman of Down District Council, said: “The spot where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea is one of the most dramatic views in Ireland, celebrated around the world – but expect still more drama when some of the world’s most iconic display aircraft will be swooping and soaring over the Mournes and sea to delight and amaze predicted audiences of around 100,000.”

Councillor Walker added: “Down District Council continues to support the region’s tourism industry with a strategy which includes a number of well-considered and carefully managed family-friendly events while also protecting the natural beauty and the peaceful atmosphere of the area. Achieving a harmonious balance between the two will allow us to develop tourism in the Mournes to the benefit of all who live, work and play here.”
The magnificent location is playing host to a one day aviation spectacular which is rapidly gaining international reputation and acclaim. This year’s lineup will include a thunderous Typhoon (fast jet) display; appearances by the iconic Lancaster; the distinctively sculpted Vulcan; the two-seat turboprop basic trainer aircraft, the Tucano (originally built by Short Brothers in Belfast); and the Supermarine Seafire (a naval version of the Supermarine Spitfire) adapted for operation from aircraft carriers.
Look out for the stunning GNAT 2 ship formation, the Falcon Jumpers and Midair Squadron’s fabulous Canberra PR9, flanked by two Hunter T7s, plus a fly-past by the ever-popular Irish Air Corps, usually based just a little further down the coastline. The B/E Aerospace Festival of Flight provides a timely mid-season injection of energy to the region’s tourism industry. Local shops, cafes, bars, caravan parks, B&Bs and hotels are all looking forward to the business bonus it brings, not only on the day itself but in terms of repeat business, long after the roar of the jets has disappeared.
