Get Creative At The Kiln And Kettle Art Café Downpatrick

The Kiln and Kettle in Downpatrick provides a great pottery and art experience for youngsters and those still young at heart

An innovative business has set up at 52 Market Street in Downpatrick. Michael and Caitlin run The Kiln and Kettle which is a fun art project for people of all ages.

In the front of the business reception area you can view seascape, landscape and animal paintings from local artist Raymond Madine, but in the business end, there is a huge range of pre-fired ceramic moulds to choose from and you can paint on your own colours and glazes.

A full house at The Kiln and Kettle as everyone is busy painting up their favourite pottery items.

When this is completed, the decorated piece is then fired by Caitlin and can be collected at a later date.

Caitlin said: “This is a good location and there is a steady footfall. People do call in and look around our bisque ware. We have a large selection from animals, plates, jugs etc.

“We cater for children’s parties and we’ve even had hen parties and baby showers at The Kiln and Kettle. The workshops are great fun and those involved get a sense of artistic achievement.

“The glaze is quick in drying and generally pieces need two undercoats before firing. The glaze is clear, shiny, and food safe.

“All of the art pieces range from as little as £5 and the more complex. ornamental ones go up to £100.

“We were really busy over the recent County Fleadh which was a great success.”

A money all painted up ready for collection.

Michael added: “Since the sessions last 2-3 hours, groups of adults tend to bring in their own coffee and tea and nibbles. It’s a very enjoyable and chilled out experience.

“We provide a wide range of items to paint up and glaze… mugs, bowls, plates, platters, dishes etc which are of practical use. And children love to get involved painting dogs, cats, and money boxes and many other items.

“And if you are visiting Downpatrick this Saturday for the Rallye Lecale motorsports, why no call in as we are just a stone’s through from St Patrick’s Square where the rally starts off from.”

“You can find us on Facebook at: The Kiln and Kettle.”
