Free Showing Of 'Dirty Dancing' At St Patrick Centre

Down District Council in partnership with the Department of the Environment’s Rethink Waste campaign are inviting residents of the district to a highly anticipated FREE movie screening of ‘Dirty Dancing’ at the St Patrick Centre, Downpatrick, on Friday 18th February at 7.30pm. The only thing they request in return is that you bring along an old glass bottle or jar!! This screening, which had to be rescheduled due to unforeseen circumstances before Christmas, is set in the 1960’s, when recycling was making its first real appearance in the UK. Dirty Dancing, staring Jennifer Grey and the late Patrick Swayze, is just the ticket for rekindling ideas from the past. So, for one night only, the Council invites you to take a step back in time and come along with your glass jar or bottle for your FREE entry to this classic, all time great, romantic movie. [caption id="attachment_19459" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Patrick Swayze in action in Dirty Dancing."][/caption] All of the glass collected at this special cinema event will be sent off for recycling. Down District Council has actively been recycling glass since 1995, with over 790 tonnes of glass collected across the district over the last year. There are 31 bottle banks in the district, as well as our 3 household recycling sites, where residents can recycle their glass jars and bottles. Using a simple process, which can be repeated over and over again without any loss in quality, glass is 100% recyclable. Chairman of Down District Council, Councillor Eamonn ONeill, said, “We continue to work very hard to promote the Council’s message of ‘Reduce Reuse Recycle’ and we hope that this free cinema event will help to raise awareness on how residents can better manage their waste and the importance of recycling glass within the district”. Environment Minister Edwin Poots also added, said, “I welcome these increasingly innovative and fun ways to encourage people to rethink their waste. Continuing to send waste to landfill means that we could face huge European Union fines and increasing landfill tax costs which will ultimately add to our rates bills. This is why making little changes to our lifestyle that help us to reduce, reuse and recycle more will help both our environment and our pockets.” Information on Down District Council’s recycling services can be found on www.downdc.gov.uk.
