Fortnightly Brown Bin Collections Continue In Newry And Ballyward Areas

Newry Mourne and Down District Council has announced that it will continue to collect Brown bins in the former Newry District Council and Ballyward areas on a fortnightly basis instead of changing to a monthly collection for the winter.

Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick said,
“This positive step will encourage residents to recycle all biodegradable waste whatever the season and continue to use the Brown bin service all year round. As the colder weather approaches less gardening waste is generated and, given the festive feasts leading up to and during Christmas, more food waste is produced.

Newry Mourne and Down District Council will collect brown bins every two weeks in the Newry and Ballyward areas instead of monthly as planned.

“Using the service prevents all biodegradable waste going to landfill and instead taken to a composting facility to be recycled into nutrient rich organic compost ready for use again. I would like to thank all residents for their continued efforts to recycle using the Brown service.”

The Brown bin service will be continued for garden waste such as leaves, pruning’s and small amounts of cold ashes which are more common at this time of year. Residents can also put the following types of food waste into their brown bin; food leftovers (cooked and uncooked), out of date food, tea bags, coffee grounds, egg shells, meat, fish, meat and fish bones, fruit and vegetable peelings plus bread and dairy products.

Residents are reminded that the Brown bin service will not accept liquids or packaging of any kind. Where recyclable, packaging should be rinsed and placed in the Blue bin ready for collection.
