The Dromara and Drumgooland Credit Union are takingover the former Danske Bank in Newcastle.

Credit Union President Terry King said: ‘The Danske bank closed its branch in Main Street in Newcastle in May 2014 and we subsequently negotiated with them and now we can publicly announce that we own the premises and we will be moving our current office from the Downs Road to the new premises in early 2015.

“At the moment in Newcastle we have two staff and volunteers who work at the Newcastle branch, but we will be increasing our employees to six in order to meet the expected demand on our services.

“We will be opening the ATM machine for member use and this will be be a step forward for local people in managing their finances with a pre-paid card.

“There have been huge shifts by the major banks and most are pulling out of the High Street and becoming Internet-styled banks. The Danske Bank will not have any branches in the south of Ireland after 2015. In Northern Ireland the Ulster Bank would be the biggest with 79 branches and the First Trust with around fifty, but they are all gradually moving to internet and online services.

“The Dromara and Drumgooland Credit Union stretches across a wide area of County Down and we provide a comprehensive raft of services from savings, loans, foreign exchange, insurance and death benefits, direct debit payments, oil saving stamps, help with home budgeting and money management, a schools’ credit union, and more.

“We have eights branches from Newcastle, Castlewellan, Kilcoo, Hilltown, Dromara, Dundrum, Ballykinlar, Killough, Rathfriland and Mayobridge.”
