Former Horse Racing Journalist Dies

Obituary For Paddy Allen.

The local horse racing, equestrian and  the farming communities were shocked  learn of the passing of Paddy Allen (35)  from Moira  on Sunday.   Paddy had in recent years further developed the Moira Equestrian Centre into a 5-star training and gallop facility for local trainers while also running schooling days and the family supplying the venue for the Iveagh point to point.

The late Paddy Allen.

The family had made a substantial investment in the complex which also hosted cross-country events for equestrians with the centre originally developed by his late father Jim, a successful farmer well known in the sheep trade.

Paddy, prior to joining forces with his father, was a sports’ journalist with local newspapers with his passion was rugby and cricket topping his list, being a mega-fan of all sporting events and also a long-standing member of the Maze racecourse. He was due to commentate on a cricket match at Warringstown on Sunday which was out of respect cancelled when organisers learnt of his passing.  Glenavon Football Cub players will sponsor a match in memory of Paddy – one of the club’s biggest fans and the players will sponsor the League Cup tie in August as a tribute.

Paddy was always smiling and great fun to be in his company and a friend to all he knew him and if you had a problem he was always there to help.  Paddy Allen is survived by his mother, Margaret.

The funeral will take place tomorrow (Wednesday 17th July) at St John’s Parish Church, Moira at 2pm.
