Final Countdown To Holywood’s Merry May Day

Preparations for one of Holywood’s highlight events of the year are reaching final stages for the big day onxa0Monday 7 May, Merry May Day.

Ards and North Down Borough Council and Holywood District and Community Council have partnered once again to present the annual festivities.

Jump, Jiggle and Jive at the Merry May Day, Holywood, County Down.

This year, the Holywood event is celebrating the new season with an enchanting spring and floral theme. Expect vibrant colours, uplifting music and dance that is sure to bring an air of delight to all those who visit. Special appearances from Floris the flower nymph and friends will bring the theme to life, capturing the attention of all around.

The fun starts atxa010amxa0and lasts untilxa04pm.xa0Food stalls and charity stalls will line High Street and Church Road with their offering of tasty goods and great bargains; visitors can meet the newly crowned May Queen and look out for mini characters all bidding for top prize in the children’s fancy dress competition, while proud family members will be cheering from the crowds surrounding Irelands only Maypole for the display of choreographed ribbon dancing by local primary school children. ‘Jump, Jiggle and Jive’ will be on hand with their mini maypole for those little one’s eager to have a go too.

A highlight of the day will be performances by the Ugandan Watoto Children’s Choir and McElhinney School of Dance. Punch and Judy will be making appearances throughout the day for those that love a puppet show.

For those interested in the depths of history that Holywood has, take a stroll to the nearby Priory where you will find living history re-enactors between12noon and 4pm.

The Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Robert Adair, said: “We have welcomed thousands to Merry May Day over the decades with a programme of activities that are appealing to children and adults alike.

“Every year the event has something new to offer but traditional favourites such as the Bonny Baby competition always stand firm in the order of the day. I look forward to meeting many visitors at this years’ event.”
