Ennis Says Annual Flag Festooning Is Intimidating

The annual festooning of flags in the Granite View and Orchard Bar area is “more to do with Intimidating and provoking” says Newry and Mourne Councillor Sinead Ennis.

dn_screenShe said: “The annual festooning of flags and emblems is interpreted by many of the local residents there as nothing to do with celebrating a culture but more to do with intimidating and provoking.” The Councillor made her comments after listening to local people’s concerns.

She added: “They like myself acknowledge the need to respect the right of all citizens to celebrate one’s culture and identity in an acceptable manner, but it is imperative that the perceptions of those who may view such displays as overtly sectarian, intimidating and indeed threatening in nature, should also be recognised and respected.

“Many residents living in the locality see this annual festooning of flags and emblems as nothing to do with celebrating a culture, but more to do with intimidating and provoking.”
