Downpatrick Sinn Féin Call For Town Clean Up

Unkempt Streets the Result of Neglect – Mac Con Midhe Downpatrick Sinn Féin Councillor, Éamonn Mac Con Midhe, has appealed for Down Council and the Roads Service to act swiftly in ensuring Downpatrick streets are kept clean and tidy. Cllr Mac Con Midhe said, “A large area of Stream Street has been neglected recently and has become festooned with weeds, litter and broken glass. As this unsightly mess surrounds the entrance to St Patrick’s Chapel I would like to see weed killer applied as soon as possible and the area maintained on a regular basis from this point forward.” “This problem has only arisen recently, and is undoubtedly a consequence of the Council’s decision to get rid of street sweepers in the area. Sadly we now have a situation whereby parishioners are having to side-step broken glass and rubbish as they attend services in the Chapel as streets in the town are becoming increasingly unkempt.” [caption id="attachment_26839" align="alignleft" width="308" caption="Councillor Eamonn Mac Con Midhe in Stream Street in Downpatrick."][/caption] “I would like to take this opportunity to call on the Roads Service and Down Council to act quickly on this matter and deliver clean and tidy streets for everybody. I believe the best way of ensuring this is done is to redeploy the street sweepers who done an important job for so many years.” Residents Concerns need Addressed Urgently – Mac Con Midhe Downpatrick Sinn Féin Councillor, Éamonn Mac Con Midhe, has called for much needed improvements in road traffic management in the Clinton Park area of Downpatrick following consultation with local residents. Cllr Mac Con Midhe said, “At the Saul Road junction motorists continue to park on the double yellow lines confident that they will get away with breaking the law. Urgent action is required to make the area safe and I would like to take this opportunity to join with the residents in calling for the double yellow lines to be extended and fixed penalty parking signs put in place and penalties consistently enforced.” “Many motorists are putting themselves, and the lives of others, in danger when they illegally park and force motorists to blindly reverse out onto the Saul Road. It is bad enough that for three weeks residents were not able to avail of refuse collection as the bin lorry could not get up the street, but it is deeply worrying that it would be impossible for an ambulance or a fire engine to access the area in a time of emergency.” Johnston Commends Road Service for Resurfacing in Downpatrick Downpatrick Sinn Féin Councillor, Liam Johnston, has commended the Roads Service for honouring their promise to carry out much needed resurfacing work in the John Street area of Downpatrick. Cllr Johnston said, “Following lengthy consultation with local residents and motorists, Sinn Féin contacted the Roads Service and requested that they take immediate action to remedy the deterioration in the road following a succession of harsh winters.” [caption id="attachment_26841" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Councillor Eamonn Mac Con Midhe looks over Clinton Park in Downpatrick."][/caption] “John Street is a popular thoroughfare and increasingly busy commuter link in the town and it was great to see such a prompt response from the Roads Service. I would like to thank them for honouring their promise.”]]>
