Popular Downpatrick singer Deborah Fitzsimmons is set to pay tribute to her late father by following in his musical footsteps and hosting a special live music event in his memory, to raise funds for the Macmillan Unit in the Ulster Hospital.

She has been performing in venues across the Region and in Belfast since she was 17.

Deborah has been inspired by her late father, Damien Fitzsimons, who played in renowned local bands Purple Haze and Red Biddy.

Deborah Fitzsimmons and family are organising a night of music ‘If the Music Fitz’ in memory of her father Damien to raise funds for the Macmillan Unit at the Ulster Hospital.

Having often shared the stage with him, Deborah is now determined to continue his musical legacy following his death in 2023.

The event, entitled ‘If The Music Fitz,’ in Denvir’s Hotel will showcase performances from 14 local bands, including musicians who played alongside Damien over the years.

Deborah said: “My dad raised us on all the best music from the 60s and 70s…Bob Dylan, Dire Straits, and the Eagles.xa0 My favourite gig was with my dad one Christmas at the Harp Bar in Belfast. Everyone was in a great mood, singing along and chanting… it was magical.”

Downpatrick singer Deborah Fitzsimmons has a wide range of influences from pop, blues and folk.

Deborah describes her music as a blend of pop, country, and blues, drawing inspiration from contemporary artists such as Amy Winehouse, Frank Ocean, Zach Bryan, Chris Stapleton, and Luke Bryan.

“I love the storytelling in their music,” she said. “I try to engage with the creative process constantly. Anytime I’m out for a walk or doing something, lyrics just pop into my head and I have to note them down.”

The Gemxa0was a tribute to my dad – that was our nickname for him,” she said. “Final Endingxa0touches on bittersweet moments in life. It was released in October and has already had 10,000 streams. The response has been amazing.”

“I’m constantly gigging. Next year, I’m planning to release my next single, followed by an EP later in the year. I’d love to play bigger stages and festivals,” she said. “In November, I attended the NI Music Prize and met so many talented local artists. My dream would be to win an award for my music there in the future.”
