Rowers definitely made a big splash in Killyleagh on Sunday past.

Radio presenter Chris Scott said: “You can listen in to this week’s programme on Wednesday 22nd September, 2021 from 7-8pm for coverage of the Killyleagh Coastal Rowing Club Regatta held on Sunday 19th September, 2021 at Killyleagh harbour.

“You could smell them….but you just couldn’t catch them….!” Those were the words of one lady competitor after this amazing event held earlier on Killyleagh’s little piece of Strangford Lough.

“Well over 100 competitors converged on the Quay and Netwalk area at Killyleagh to take part in the regatta. The first race started at 10.00am, with the final race at 2.30pm. Competitors and spectators were blessed with glorious weather and almost perfect conditions for their row.

“The sun beamed down on teams from Ardglass, Donaghadee, Dundrum, Killyleagh, Portavogie, Sketrick and Strangford as they competed against each other across the different races.

“Ardglass Lass, Knotty Lass, Roon Roak, Gocean, Sea Swallow, Mystic Wave, Ramharry, Knotty Buoy, Skart, Strangfjordr and Danny Buoy were today’s workhorses with finishing times ranging from 5 minutes 39:29 seconds to 10 minutes: 52:55 seconds!”

Members of Killyleagh Coastal Rowing Club enjoy a quiet Sunday row.

Chris added: “This was a well organised event and an exciting and eventful day. Well done to all involved!  If you tune in this Wednesday evening (7-8pm) to the Chris Scott Show on FM105 Down Community Radio you will hear interviews at the event with some of the competitors, the organisers and a boat builder!”

In this week’s programme Chris chats to some of the competitors from Killyleagh across the age groups, some of the background staff, team members from the Strangford, Dundrum and Portavogie clubs, and Stephen Robinson from Killyleagh, who assisted in building their first Skiffy many years ago!

Chris will be playing music from Abba, Lighthouse Family, Simple Minds and local singer/songwriter Conal Montgomery. Conal is due to release his new single “The Shores of Killyleagh” on 15th October. This is your chance to have a sneak preview!!
