Newry and Mourne Councillor Sean Doran has expressed his concerns over the dumping of rubbish around the Mourne area.
He said: “The fly tipping that is taking place around the shores and countryside of the Mournes has reached epidemic proportions. I visited Dunavil beach last week and was horrified at the amount of household and industrial waste that was dumped at the entrance to the shore. I spoke to people who were walking on the beach and they were disgusted at the state of the place. A resident of the area told me that he recently had ten black bags of rubbish which included dirty nappies dumped on his land.
The Sinn Fein representative added: “Over these last few months fly-tipping seems to have got out of control in the Mournes and there is no excuse for this behaviour as nearly every household has three bins and there is also a first class recycling centre available.
“It also costs the rate payer an absolute fortune to get this rubbish removed. I have been in contact with environmental health who have assured me that they will do their utmost to catch the people responsible and I would encourage the residents of these areas to take the registration numbers of the vehicles of anyone seen dumping waste and report them to environmental health. In the Mournes we have some of the most beautiful countryside and beaches in Ireland and we should endeavour to preserve these for the enjoyment of everyone.”
