Councillor Laura Devlin elected Chairperson Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

Mourne’s SDLP Councillor Laura Devlin and current Chairperson of Newry Mourne and Down Council has welcomed Council’s decision to allocate ten brown caddy food bins and 10 litter pickers to each Primary School across our District.

Cllr Devlin said: “Back in January I was approached by a local school in my area which wanted to encourage all things recycling and they believed the brown caddy bins were a very important element in the recycling education.

“I spoke to Council Officers at the time and they agreed to support this, so I am delighted that Council has now approved to roll this scheme out throughout our District. In doing so, it will reach all 101 Primary Schools.

“I know from my own home, my son keeps us all right in terms of what goes in each bin so to have this reinforced at school will hopefully improve our green credentials and in the long run save money too, as less waste will proceed to landfill.

“So, it really is a win/win outcome for the schools and also Council.”
