Devlin Welcomes Council Decision To Appoint A Design Team For Newcastle Centre Development

SDLP Mournes Councillor Laura Devlin and South Down MLA Colin McGrath are delighted to see the new Newcastle Leisure Centre development take a very notable step forward. 

Cllr Devlin said: ” At tonight’s meeting [3rd November 2025] Council ratified this month’s committee decision to appoint a design team which will begin to deliver upon our new replacement leisure centre on the current site. 

Cllr Laura Devlin, pictured with South Down SDLP MLA Colin McGrath, welcomes the significant step for the council to appoint a design team for the redevelopment of the Newcastle Centre noting a full public consultation will take place soon.

“This is not before time but a significant step that must be welcomed. 

“The design team when appointed will begin engaging with local groups and people about what they what to see in this new Leisure and community facility. 

“A lot of facilities have been mentioned in the press and social media , but no decision has yet been made so please do feed into the consultations that will take place. 

“It is time now to look positively to the future and to see at very long last a new centre delivered that is fit for purpose for the greater Newcastle area.”
