The plaque has been commissioned by the Council to acknowledge this significant milestone in modern history and to provide a permanent point of reflection within the district.

Speaking at the unveiling, Chairperson Councillor Philip Campbell said: “This plaque provides a lasting marker to recognise the 80th anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day.

“It is important that we acknowledge and reflect on the historical significance of these events, both globally and locally.

“By placing this plaque at Down County Museum, we are ensuring that future generations will have a clear reminder of the impact of the Second World War and the importance of understanding our shared history.”

The plaque will remain on permanent display at Down County Museum, forming part of the museum’s wider heritage offering for both residents and visitors.
