Council Runs Competition For School Pupils On HRC

Downpatrick Household Recycling Centre (HRC) celebrates opening with new competition for school children.

To celebrate the opening of Downpatrick’s new household recycling centre which took place on Tuesday 29 October, Newry Mourne and Down District Council is holding a competition for primary school children aimed at promoting recycling waste from an early age.

From l-r, Lucinda Scott, Newry MOurne and Down District Council Environmental Education Officer; Manus McEvoy, a pupil from St Patrick’s School, Saul; Council Chairperson Cllr Charlie Casey and Charlotte Budd, ERP NI Regional Manager.

The competition, which is open to all primary school children in the Downpatrick District Electoral Area, has been generously sponsored by the European Recycling Platform (ERP UK) who is the Council’s partner for the collection and recycling of batteries and waste electrical equipment.  In order to be in with a chance to win a new Fitbit Ace of Kinder E-reader, they are invited to come along the new HRC on the Flying Horse Road, Downpatrick accompanied by a parent or responsible adult, to complete a ‘quiz trail’ around the site.

Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Charlie Casey, said: “This competition is a fantastic way to encourage the pupils in Downpatrick to go down to the recycling centre to see how and what they can recycle. It is also a great way to help the pupils understand the importance of reusing and recycling.”

Charlotte Budd, Regional Account Manager at ERP for Northern Ireland, said: “We are happy to be sponsoring this innovative competition. It is a great opportunity for parents and children to become accustomed to the HRC and the fantastic recycling facilities it has to offer. I encourage anyone taking part in the competition to bring along some batteries or that old electrical appliance you have been meaning to throw out so that it can be recycled and turned into something more useful.”

The competition has been promoted through local primary schools and competition entries will be accepted until Friday 15 November.

The winners will be notified through their primary school during the week commencing 18November.
