Connor Murphy’s Body Found In Amsterdam Canal

The late Connor Murphy, whose body was eventually found in a canal in Amsterdam after searches lasting several weeks.

Connor was reported to have been in Oudeschans in Amsterdam with a friend, and between 1-2am on 13 January he left and had not been seen from that time. He was heading towards the Leidseplein area. However, it was on Saturday evening that his family said that Connor’s body had been found but it will not be properly identified until the DNA tests are completed on Monday.

One post on Facebook from the Murphy family said: “Day 34 proved to be the end of this nightmare. We didn’t get the post card we hoped for. It is confirmed Connor Murphy was recovered from the canal on Friday 15th February.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported us, the Murphy’s and The Dam Fam. For all the prayers, candles, masses, messages, phone calls, visits likes and shares. For your generosity. All money donated will go towards those charities that have helped us and gave us hope and encouragement when we felt there was none.

“We got our miracle. We got our son, brother, brother-in law, uncle, best man, cousin and friend back.

“We as a family are going to take time together to process this. We thank you for your privacy at this time.

“When we get more details. I will let you all know.

South Down MLA Colin McGrath commenting on the news that Newcastle man Connor Murphy’s body has been found in a canal in Amsterdam, said: “I was saddened to hear the news that Connor’s body has been found.

“This will be an ultimately devastating closure of this horrendous nightmare for the family. The period ahead will be difficult for them but I know the local community will rally round and offer their support.

“My thoughts and prayers are with them at this time.”

SDLP Mournes Councillor Laura Devlin commenting on this latest development said: “Newcastle and the wider community are in mourning for Conor who was so well thought of here locally. The family and all his connections have been through hell since his disappearance in Amsterdam some five weeks ago.

“They continue to be in my thoughts and prayers at this extremely difficult time.”
