Everyone knows the nursery rhyme telling the little ladybird to go home as her house is on fire, but how many people know that in fact there are  15 different types of ladybird in Ireland?

To learn more about this fascinating and appealing little insect and some of her friends, the Biodiversity unit of Down District Council is holding a Ladybird themed afternoon this Saturday, 14 June, in the gardens of the Quoile Pondage, Downpatrick from 2- 4pm.

“Ladybirds come in all colours from orange with cream spots to plain brown, not forgetting our little black and red friend;  some have just 2 spots while the spottiest species has 22!” said Abby McSherry, biodiversity officer, who is organising the event this weekend.

She aded: “The Ladybird afternoon will be suitable for all the family and we welcome novice ladybird hunters as well as those who would like to learn how to record the rarer species.  Other activities on the day will include ladybird facepainting, colouring sheets and decorating ladybird cookies.”
