Clonduff man dies in Sydney Australia

Local politicians have expressed their condolences at the recent passing of Lorcán Branagan (26) from Clonduff who died in Australia.

Lórcan Branagan went missing last Saturday around 6pm and was found early the following morning in the water in Sydney Harbour.

A post on the Young Ireland GAA website in Sydney said: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our cherished member, Lorcán Branagan.

“Lorcán’s unexpected departure has left us all reeling with shock and profound sorrow. Since joining our club this football season, Lorcán has made an indelible impression both on and off the pitch.

“His talent, enthusiasm, and kindness endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

“Lorcán’s exceptional performance in our internal tournament, The Railway Cup, showcased his skill and unwavering commitment as a defender.

“Beyond his sporting abilities, Lorcán was admired for his warmth and friendly disposition, swiftly becoming a beloved figure within our club.

“Our thoughts and condolences are extended to his father Tony, mother Terri, brother Padráig, sister Caitlín, her partner and his niece Ríona partner Shona, as well as to his relatives, friends, teammates in Australia, and his home club Clonduff.

“We also extend our sympathies to anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

“A memorial service in honour of Lorcán took place at Mary Immaculate Church, Waverly, at 6 pm on Wednesday, March 27th.

“During these difficult times, it is vital that we unite as a community to offer support to one another.

We kindly request that the privacy of Lorcán’s family and friends be respected during this period of mourning, particularly considering the complexities of his circumstances in Australia and the journey to bring him home.

“Ár dheis Dé go riabh a anam.”

Hazzard expresses condolences at death of young man from Clonduff

Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard has expressed his condolences to the family of a Lorcán Branagan from Clonduff who died in Australia. 

The South Down MP said: “It’s devastating to learn about the tragic and sad death of young Lorcán Branagan.

“My thoughts are with his family, friends and the whole Clonduff community at this heartbreaking time. 

“Lorcán was only twenty-six with his whole life ahead of him. This has left the entire community stunned and heartbroken. 

“I have no doubt everyone will rally around Lorcán’s family in what will be difficult times ahead.”

McGrath offers condolences to family of Lorcán Branagan 

SDLP South Down MLA Colin McGrath has also offered his condolences to the family and friends of Lorcán Branagan.

ColinMcGrath said: “My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Lorcán Branagan.

“This is not the first tragedy to befall the family, and my heart goes out to them and their grief will be compounded by the fact this has taken place so far from home.

“I’m sure that the local community will rally around the Branagan family in the difficult days ahead as they come to terms with their unimaginable loss.”
