Residents in Newcastle are complaining about odours around the harbour area. Mourne’s Councillor Willie Clarke (Sinn Féin) has called for improvements to be made to the Newcastle treatment works and associated pumping stations filter systems following complaints from residents.

Cllr Clarke said: “Following complaints from residents, I have made representations to NI Water asking them to improve the air quality at Newcastle Harbour by ensuring the ventilation infrastructure is fit for purpose.

” I would urge NI Water to solve the terrible smell emanating from its sewage treatment plant.”

A spokesperson from NI Water said: “Further to reports of odour near the Newcastle Wastewater Treatment Works, an inspection has been carried out and NI Water can confirm the treatment works is operating normally

“We believe the odour is coming from the shore at low tide, due to high temperatures and dry weather conditions.

“Newcastle Wastewater Treatment Works is subject to, and currently compliant with the Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012.

“NI Water is happy to facilitate a site meeting with Councillor Clarke if there are any further concerns regarding the plant.”
