Councillor Willie Clarke Urges Responsible Dog Ownership Amid Increase in Dog Fouling Complaints
Sinn Féin Mournes Councillor Willie Clarke is calling on dog owners in the Newcastle area to act responsibly and ensure they pick up after their pets.
This appeal comes in response to a significant rise in complaints about dog fouling on local pavements.

Councillor Clarke said: “I have been contacted by numerous residents who are concerned about the amount of dog excrement on the pavements around Tollymore Road, Bryansford Road, and the Tullybrannigan area of Newcastle.
“This issue is not only unpleasant but also poses health risks, especially for children.”
“Parents have reported that dog dirt is ending up on their prams as they walk their children to school.
“People need to be aware of the dangers and diseases associated with dog fouling such as toxicara. While there are currently no bins in these locations, this does not excuse the importance of being a responsible dog owner and picking up and disposing properly afterwards.
In addition to dog fouling, there is also a problem with litter in the area. Councillor Clarke emphasised the urgent need for additional bins to be installed at these locations to help address the issue.
He said: “A particular concern for residents and visitors is Donard Forest in Newcastle, which has been plagued with dog fouling. I will be contacting Council officers and the Forestry Service to find an agreement to install a number of bins at this location.
“Dog owners need to take responsibility for their pets and help keep the community clean and safe for everyone.”
