The Just Adam Band will start the celebrations by belting out a few Christmas favourites from 5pm. The Snow Queen and popular Disney’s Frozen characters will lead a parade of local children from the Down Arts Centre, through Market Street to St Patrick Square with their magical lanterns at 6pm.

Colm McAlinden from Down Community FM will be Master of Ceremonies and Newcastle Glee Musical Society will be paying homage to the ‘Frozen ‘theme and our ‘Frozen Winter Wonderland’ by performing a few favourites from the popular Disney film. Students from St Patrick’s Grammar School will provide some traditional carol singing whilst St Malachy’s High School will be singing tunes from the timeless musical Annie. Do not miss the opportunity to sit in a snow globe and have your photograph taken with your favourite ‘Frozen‘ characters.

Santa will make his grand entrance before the most anticipated part of the evening; a pyrotechnic display in St Patrick Square before lighting the Christmas Tree. To finish the evening local primary school children will witness the Balloon Launch of their Santa Letters which will make their way to Lapland following the official tree switch on. The evening does end there: follow the Snow Queen back to Down Arts Centre to see ‘Voices of Lecale’ sing a festive mix of traditional carols and popular songs.

Down District Council Chairman, Councillor William Walker said: “This year’s Christkindl switch-on is really focused on the local community. We’ve booked a local band and radio station, and enlisted the musical talents of local schools and the Newcastle Glee society to provide the majority of our entertainment.

“Christkindl is a local event for local people. I on behalf of the Council would encourage you to show your support and visit Downpatrick on Friday 28 November for a night of home-grown entertainment. I’m personally looking forward to the pyrotechnic display and seeing the faces of local school children light up as they watch their Santa letters transcend into the sky. Don’t miss it!”
