Local politicians have condemned the crash on the Clarkhill Road in Castlewellan as a very dangerous act which could have caused a loss of life.

Hazzard Says Scene Of Crash Was ‘Disgusting’.

South Down MP Chris Hazzard said: “These are disgusting scenes in Clarkhill Road, Castlewellan, tonight following anti-community elements on the rampage once again. It is an absolute fluke of luck that no child was on that footpath

“Local community losing all patience with local PSNI as these well known anti-community individuals are seemingly left to run amok with no consequences.

“Sinn Féin will be meeting PSNI on this in the days ahead and also re-emphasising the urgent need for traffic calming measures on this stretch of road once again with Roads officials.

South Down MLA Colin McGrath has said there will need to be a full investigation by PSNI and Transport NI into a serious car accident near Castlewellan. 

McGrath Says Traffic Incident In Castlewellan Will Need Full Investigation.

The South Down MLA said:  “The images from the aftermath of the incident near Castlewellan are truly horrific. It looks more like a bomb-site that a traffic accident.” 

“As I understand it only one car was moving and its impact in the RTA has caused the destruction of a number of vehicles and damage to property in the area. 

“This is a serious incident and will need fully investigated by PSNI. I will be speaking with senior officers to ensure this is fully examined and a thorough explanation provided. 

“Local residents have been complaining for years that speeding traffic in the area could cause death or damage and this is what local people have had to witness tonight. It is an absolutely shocking event on their doorsteps.”
