Castlewellan Notes

GAVIN Corrigan just can’t stay out of the news this week. Having been named recently as Referee of the Year in East Down he was 4th official in Croke Park at the NFL game between Dublin and Mayo. An action packed game where the score ended 4 -15 to 3-13 to the Dubs. Good to see Gavin up where he should be at the highest level. Congratulations to Michael Cunningham and his St Colman’s colleagues who retained The McCrory Cup on a score line of 2-09 to 2-08 in a pulsating final against St Patricks Dungannon on St Patricks Day in Armagh. Good luck to them in this weekend’s All-Ireland Colleges semi-final which will be played in Crossmaglen against Dundalk. Well done to Paddy Boyle who played at full back for the Down Under 21 team who drew with red hot favourites Tyrone on last Wednesday Night. The replay will be tonight (Wednesday) in Omagh. Good luck to Paddy and all the lads. Our Senior Footballers are organising a Casino Royale in The Club on this Saturday night from 8.00pm. Games include Blackjack, Roulette and Poker. This event is strictly for the Over 18 age group. The Under-16 team have been unfortunate in that they have again come up against very strong opposition in Bredagh in the East Down League. Whilst losing the game 4-08 to 0-12 they played very well. There were great performances from Sean Hardy, Paul King and Paddy Gallagher in defence. Mickey Gilmore from Midfield put on a tally of 0-05 while Eanna McCartan tagged on 0-02. Good performances from Rossa McCartan, Conan Brogan and Martin Brannigan. Despite the defeat a good performance by the lads. The Under16s will play St John’s Belfast in a challenge match at the Bann Road Complex on Thursday Night at 7.30. The Seconds returned to winning ways this week with a 7 point victory away to An Riocht. Good to see David Gilmore finding his shooting boots again with a 1-2 tally. Must be something the Gilmores are getting at home with Mickey scoring well for the Under 16 team! The Senior Hurlers got their nightmare outing against Rasharkin out of the system with a well earned draw against Ballyvarley last Saturday in the Ulster League. Lessons have been learned from previous weeks so it is good to see the boys bouncing back. Down Under-16 Camogie Team suffered a six point defeat this week leaking two goals in the last minutes of the game against Meath. Good performances from the Town Girls Aoife Keown and Ciara Gibson.
