A significant part of the meeting was spent discussing the big Christmas freeze and the impact this had on the lives of many. Down District Councillor Eamonn ONeill advised those present of his actions over the Christmas period in securing the opening of the Bann Road Recycling Centre and Newcastle Leisure Centre for drinking water supplies, showers and toilet facilities.xa0 This was welcomed by members. The icy roads were a huge issue with a major increase in the number of road traffic collisions.xa0 The Circular Road in Castlewellan was one route that particular attention was drawn to. There was some serious concern when the issue was raised about the DRD Roads Service’s gritting schedule and this road was not on it. John Duggan highlighted the increased usage of this road in recent years. He said, “In recent years, many more houses have been constructed in the vicinity of the Circular Road, a crèche and a bunscoil have been opened as well as a community centre.xa0 This has obvious implications for traffic usage of this road.xa0 It is imperative that the Roads Service look at their gritting schedule across the District and I hope that particular attention is drawn to the Circular Road, as I am very seriously concerned for the safety of those using this route – especially in such icy conditions.” Cllr ONeill went on to advise members that an agreement was reached between the Roads Service and Council officials in respect of ice on the footpaths in the three principal towns of our district, which was welcomed by all.xa0 Councillor O’Neill also xa0praiseed the work of Council officials who cleared the compacted ice from the footpaths along xa0the Main Street in Castlewellan. Mr Duggan expressed concern when Minister for Regional Development was quizzed previously about liability if a trader was to clear the area in front of his/her premises and someone was to fall.xa0 He had said explained Mr Dugan that xa0’it was unlikely that they would be liable’.xa0 Mr Duggan went on to stress the importance of this being cleared up. “Many traders and individuals are happy to clear the ice and snow, however, they xa0are reluctant to do so because of the liability issue. I therefore await the Minister to shed some clarity on the matter.” The meeting concluded by Mr Duggan encouraging all who are offered the swine flu injection to avail of it, and to warn all householders of bogus callers. “Be sure to check the ID of any caller to your home,” he said.]]>
