Public and Online Consultations Launched for Recreational Hub adjacent to Camlough Lake, Newry

A new facility could be coming to Camlouigh Lake near Newry to cater for water-based and non-water activities boosting tourism and recreational activities for the area.

Newry Mourne and Down District Council, has set up a Public and an Online Consultation to seek the public’s views for the development of a Recreational Hub adjacent to Camlough Lake, Newry.

The proposal seeks to provide facilities for both water and non-water based activities at popular Camlough Lake.

The proposal includes a single storey multi-use building, outdoor space with external showers, changing facilities, slipway, kayak storage, picnic areas, vehicular turning and bus and car parking areas.

Development proposals include upgrading the of existing vehicular access off the Newtown Road for the provision of entrance and exit lanes and associated visibility splays. 

There is also a new pedestrian access linked to the existing lake footway.

Camlough Lake near Newry where a proposal to open a centre to accommodate water-based activities and non-water activities is being considered.

A public consultation event will be held in:

St. Malachy’s Primary School, 3 Chapel Road, Camlough BT35 7HF on: Thursday 7 December 2023 from 4pm to 8pm. 

Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Valerie Harte said: “This is a positive step forward to develop new recreational facilities at Camlough Lake.

“These initial proposals and concepts seek residents’ direct engagement and personal feedback.

“We are keen that as many local people feel involved in the ongoing development of this project and take the opportunity to attend the in person consultation event or to complete the online version.”

The online consultation will close on Thursday 14 December.

Once all of the feedback has been considered and any necessary changes made, the design team will proceed to submit a planning application to the Council’s Planning Department.

Funding for this project has been provided to Council by the UK Governments Levelling Up fund.

The Levelling Up Fund is a competitive fund, with funding distributed to places across the UK on the basis of successful project selection.

The Fund will set aside at least £800 million across Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland over four years from 2021-2022 to 2024-2025.
