Bryansford GAC Notes

Ladies play Annaclone in the Final of the Senior Championship at Downpatrick on Saturday at 6:00pm. This is the second time the Ladies have been in the Final and the girls are striving for their first Championship Title. They ask that as many members as possible come out to the game and your support would be very much appreciated. The Seniors were in blistering form against neighbours Kilcoo in the league. By half time the score read 2.06 to 0.00. The second half saw a fight back by the Magpies but their tally of 1.03 was answered with 1.02 to leave the final score at 3.08 to 1.03. No doubt Kilcoo will be looking to mount a more serious challenge when both clubs meet in the Championship. This Friday the Seniors are away to Longstone. The first half score made the game look a lot closer than it was with Bryansford leading by 0.08 to 0.05. The defence stifled much of the Kilcoo attack, limiting their forwards to just four more points. Up front for Bryansford Shane King took some superb long range scores, including two frees, and Fergal Maguire came off the bench to add three more. The Ford rattled over eleven points in the second half and only once were really troubled at the back. Keeper Paddy Baker, however, pulled off a spectacular save to the dismay of Kilcoo’s Nathan Smyth. The Under -12 boys had a busy weekend. On Saturday the boys got to the Cup final of the Downpatrick tournament beating some of the leading South Down teams, Burren and Ballyholland, on the way. Unfortunately Rossa from Belfast proved to be too strong in the final. On Sunday both the A and B teams went to table toppers Carryduff for a hard fought league fixture. The A team were extremely unfortunate. With a minute left and 2 points down, in a game were the lead went one way and then the other, full forward Ryan O’Higgins, was badly fouled when in on goal. Under the “Go games” rules there are no penalties and rather than getting the near certain 3 pointer the game ended with Bryansford only getting a point to reduce the Carryduff lead to one point at the end. However, the team can be very proud of their performance on the day. The B team boys gave one of their best displays of the season with plenty of stout defending and then hitting Carryduff on the break. The B team have set a very good example this season with a marked improvement in team play as well as individual skill level as the season has went on.
