Brexit Could Damage Down Tourism Says Ritchie

SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has questioned the UK Brexit Minister in the House of Commons on protections for Northern Ireoland tourism industry. If a hard Brexit emerges,  tourists may avoid a trio to the North beccause of extra controls.

She said: “Throughout recession and economic downturn, the tourism industry in South Down and across Northern Ireland has found innovative ways of surviving and thriving.

“The threat posed by Brexit, however, and particularly the return of a hard border, would critically impair those businesses which have added significant value to our economy and communities across the North.

“The disincentive impact that customs checks or border controls would have on those travelling North to experience our first class tourism product cannot be underestimated.

“I am continuing to pursue robust protection for our local tourism industry in the face of Brexit.”
