“The recurrence of this problem reflects a broader environmental issue that requires urgent attention, not just in Castlewellan but right across the North.

“I have been in direct contact with Newry Mourne and Down District Council to discuss immediate measures to protect public health, the environment, and the visitor experience at Castlewellan Forest Park.

Chris Hazzard MP has been in contact with DAERA and Newry Mourne and Down District Council regarding the pollution on Castlewellan Lake with blue-green algae.

“I have also written to the DAERA Minister, seeking clarity on what steps his Department and its agencies are taking to tackle this recurring issue.”

The South Down MP added: ” It’s crucial that the impact on the local community and tourism is mitigated. In the longer term, we need to see joined up action and investment in water quality management to prevent such occurrences in future.
