Bee Safe Events Hosted By NMD Council Across District

Over 1,700 primary school children from across the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Area took part in ‘Bee Safe’ events, held at various locations across the district from Monday 3 March to Friday 14March 2025.

The events aimed to teach children how to keep themselves safe and avoid potentially dangerous situations – particularly as they prepare for the transition to secondary education.

Organised by the Council’s Environmental Health Department (Health Improvement), the events gave children the opportunity to engage in a wide range of real-life health and safety scenarios which they may encounter in everyday life.

The workshops covered key safety and wellbeing topics including:

• Home Accident Prevention and Take 5 Steps to Wellbeing delivered by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council;

• Internet Safety presented by Police Service of Northern Ireland;

• Bus Safety facilitated by Translink;

• Fire Safety in the Home co-ordinated by Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service

• and Vaping led by Cancer Focus.

The events combined expertise from multiple agencies, giving schools a valuable opportunity to learn essential life skills in a fun and engaging environment.

Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne attended the event and said; “I am delighted that these events have been organised for primary seven pupils across the district.

“Equipping young people with essential safety and wellbeing skills is invaluable as they prepare for the transition to secondary education.

“The ‘Bee Safe’ events are a great example of how partnership working across the Newry Mourne and Down District Council area can deliver meaningful and lasting benefits for our young people.”
