NMD Council’s ‘Be Active For Health’ Programme Continues to Deliver Activity Sessions to those in Need.

Throughout Newry Mourne and Down District Council’s COVID-19 response, its ‘Be Active for Health’ programme has continued to deliver of a range of physical activity sessions to referred clients aimed to help prevent certain health conditions from developing further.

The ‘Be Active for Health’ programme is an early intervention initiative funded by Newry Mourne and Down District Council, Southern Health and Social Care Trust and South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust.

The Programme uses a mix of online physical activity sessions, outdoor sessions, weekly videos demonstrating exercise routines and weekly challenges all with encouragement and support to those who need it most.

Brenda Degan, from Downpatrick, is one of the referred clients who is benefitting from the scheme.

Brenda said: “Twelve weeks ago I was just sitting about the house knitting. I was feeling pretty low as I was totally inactive and lockdown made it worse as I could not go out.  If I wanted to go out, I needed someone with me as I was on a stick.

“I had an operation three years ago and had been recuperating slowly, so when I was accepted onto the Be Active for Health programme, I was dubious as to how I would be able to manage any activity.

“But under the support of Leanne, who told me to take any activity at my own pace, I began to slowly enjoy walking, circuits, yoga and all the other activities that Leanne plans for us.

“I now have more energy than I have had in years, I am more positive in my outlook and look forward to meeting up with the lovely group of people who take part in the Be Active for Health programme.

Councillor Laura Devlin elected Chairperson
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

“Many thanks to Leanne Oakes who is a great support; and thank you also for the Programme which has given me back a lot of physical activity, a more positive mental outlook on life, a structure in my daily routines and a spring in my step!”

Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Laura Devlin said: “It is very encouraging to hear of Brenda’s journey and the benefits the Programme can bring during difficult times, such as COVID19 Lockdown.

“The Council has two Health Referral Co-ordinators working across the district who engage with referred clients by continually providing personal ongoing support, encouragement and bespoke physical activity opportunities to support their specific health need.

“Clients who are referred can enjoy physical activity sessions such as gentle circuits, aerobics, walking, yoga and cycling group. I look forward to hearing of more success outcomes from this worthwhile Programme.”
