Ballynahinch RFC Gets Off To A New Season At Ballymacarn

Rugby returns to Ballymacarn Park after a long spell out due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ulster Rugby Premiership D1.

Ballynahinch 33 Rainey 7.

Match: Saturday 28th August.

Rugby Returns To Ballymacarn Park in Ballynahinch.

Rugby returned to Ballymacarn Park in sunshine as the senior side opened their campaign with a comfortable bonus win over a competitive but ultimately well beaten Rainey side.

The home side led 7-0 at half-time following a score from debutant back rower Diego Vidal and were perhaps guilty of forcing the play a little too much in the backline which led to a few misplaced offloads and thwarted their attempts to pull clear of a gutsy Rainey defence.

Whatever the coaching team of Adam Craig, John Gunson and Kyle McCall said at half-time had the desired effect as the home side ran in four excellent tries after the break.

Firstly a deft chip from Greg Hutley was gathered by centre Yasser Omar who powered his way over from 30m out. A dominant scrum in the Rainey 22 then allowed No 8 Callum Irvine to dummy his way over up the blind side to put daylight between the sides at 21-0.

A Rainey score then seemed to galvanise the home side and they played some thrilling rugby to complete the bonus point win with two Aaron Cairns tries. Superb interplay from backs and forwards allowed Kelvin Hamilton the freedom of the park and the front row replacement fired a superb long pass out to Cairns who torched the cover and scored.

Omar then capped an impressive afternoon with a nice offload to put Cairns clear and seal a very satisfactory afternoon for the Ballymacarn men.

Malone make the trip to Ballynahinch this weekend after an impressive opening day victory over Armagh.

A young 2nd XV lost to Enniskillen by 20 points to 10 in their first outing of the season. The game was notable for the return of Gareth Gill following a serious knee injury and no doubt the side will begin to gel over the coming weeks.
