PUPILS from the St Patrick’s Primary School in Ballynahinch enjoyed their xa0first school council meeting in splendid surroundings… inxa0the new Down District Council Chamber in the Downshire Civic Centre.

Nine students from the school met Down Council Chairman Councillor Councillor Mickey Coogan who explained the workings of the Council to them and the background to the new Council offices.

Councillor Coogan said: ‘I am delighted to see the pupils of St Patrick’s Primary School are encouraged to express their views and opinions so that they can develop their citizenship skills. We must value the children’s suggestions about certain aspects of school life and we must consult with them about important changes.

“I hope the pupils will continue to meet to share ideas and discuss any concerns. This gives St Patrick’s Primary School pupils the opportunity to influence policy-making and decision-making in their own school, their first experience of engaging in local democracy.”
