Ardglass Marina is back in action following a temporary closure due to the Covid-19 epidemic.

Speaking about a new initiative at Ardglass marina, Director Brian Gill was delighted that they have opened the doors during the summer period for the the motor home park.

He added: “It has been a difficult few months being closed and it has shortened the season for us. However, it is encouraging to see a real buzz about the marina today.

“There are a good number of local yachts and small boats active and berthed in the marina and there has been a constant stream of visiting yachts and boats coming in which is very encouraging.

‘We are looking over the horizon at future developments for the marina, but the major piece of work requiring to be done soon will be dredging out the basin which will be a very costly but necessary exercise.”

Ardglass marina is set in the picturesque village of Ardglass.

Motor home park picking up strongly

Mr Gill explained: “Last year we opened up the motor home park and today there are six motorhomes at the moment and likely to be more later on.

“The motor home parking area at Ardglass marina has been in development over the last two years and was opened for visitors in the spring of 2019.

“Phase 1 of the project provided visitors with secure parking. A new entrance was constructed providing an electric gate with keypad access to a private parking area where visitors could avail of all the marina facilities including a newly refurbished shower block with disabled facilities, kitchen and laundry area.

“This new development has proven very popular through the summer of 2019.

“It encouraged the management to go ahead with phase 2 of the project which would involve an expenditure of £20,000 by providing six new parking sites complete with hook up electric and water points, chemical toilet disposal point, and grey water disposal area. And a new landscaped area complete with picnic tables and barbecue area was also provided.

“All this work was carried out over the winter of 2019 with plans to open for Easter 2020 with many bookings being taken for the Easter weekend.

“Unfortunately with the onset of Covid-19 and the restrictions that followed, the Marina and motor home park were forced to close like many other businesses.

“As restrictions slowly lifted the business finally opened on 26 June with bookings being taken for the first night.

“Since then the marina management have been encouraged by the many enquiries and bookings being taken for the summer and a steady stream of motor homes arriving on a daily basis not only bringing benefit to the marina but also to the many businesses in Ardglass and helping support the local economy.”
