Animal Activist Group PETA Visits Newry

PETA’s ‘Hell on Wheels’ Hits Newry in Bid to Turn Locals Off Pork

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – points out that when it comes to the ability to feel pain, pigs are as sensitive as humans.

PETA’s “Hell on Wheels”truck rolled into Newry today 14th October) to give locals an up-close look at the suffering behind every bacon sandwich and pork sausage.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is the largest animal rights organisation in the world.

Their key ethical aim is to highlight the human desire that people can eat any species they choose.

Your bacon and eggs and bangers and mash may never seem the same again!

The hyper-realistic pig transport truck, covered with images of real pigs on their way to slaughter, bombarded diners heading to Newry eateries that serve pig meat.

“Every bacon sandwich, sausage roll, and pulled pork burger came from a once-living, sensitive individual who was crammed onto a truck for a terrifying journey to their death,” says PETA Vice President of Programmes Elisa Allen.

“PETA’s ‘Hell on Wheels’ truck is an appeal to anyone who eats animals to remember that the meat industry is cruel to them and that the only kind meal is a vegan one.”

PETA notes that pigs are soothed by music, love playing ball, sleep in “pig piles,” and female pigs are naturally doting mothers.

The PETA spokesperson said that “in the meat industry, mother pigs are confined to farrowing crates so small that they can’t even turn around, let alone fulfil their strong urge to build a nest as they would naturally do.

“They’re forcibly impregnated over and over again, and each litter of piglets is taken away from them after only a few weeks. Workers chop off piglets’ tails and clip their teeth with pliers – and the animals endure intense confinement before their throats are slashed in abattoirs.”

PETA’s “Hell on Wheels” truck is touring the UK and Ireland throughout October.

The truck’s next stop will be Belfast.

Whatever your dietery leanings are, PETA are calling on consideration to the pig which is often maligned in the food production process particularly their husbandry and method of being slaughtered. But it should be noted there are piggeries where the pigs are free range and are cared for humanely.

“It is important too to flag up that there may be eateries that only serve up humanely processed pig meat and that PETA’s shock tactics may ruffle a lot of feathers in the food industry.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – points out that when it comes to the ability to feel pain, hunger, and thirst, a pig is similar to a dog.
