Anaphylaxis Support Group In Banbridge Reaches Out

A local volunteer is to host a support group for people in County Down at risk of severe allergies.

Do you or a member of your family have a severe allergy?

Worried and have questions?  Then come along to a unique support group supported and attended by medical experts

Fiona Peters runs a support group to help others affected by severe allergies, or anaphylaxis. The next meeting will take place on Monday 2 October 2017 at Banbridge Leisure Centre, 15 Downshire Place, Banbridge, Co Down, BT32 3JY between 7pm and 9pm.

The UK is one of the top three countries in the world for the highest incident of allergy and about 7 million people have allergies severe enough to require specialist allergy care. Fiona’s support group is run in conjunction with the Anaphylaxis Campaign, the only UK-wide charity focused on supporting those at risk of severe allergies.

Anaphylaxis Campaign CEO, Lynne Regent said: “It’s brilliant that Fiona runs a support group for us in Co Down. Many people in the general population do not understand just how serious allergy and anaphylaxis can be. Our support groups, like the one Fiona is running, provide a vital touch point for affected families and individuals and are a really positive way for them to support each other.”

Places are free but donations will be gratefully received.

The ultimate aim is to create a safe environment for all people with allergies by working with and educating the food industry, schools, pre-schools, colleges, health professionals and other key audiences.

The focus is on medical facts, food labelling, risk reduction and allergen management. It actively campaigns to raise awareness of anaphylaxis with the general public and with the relevant authorities for better allergy care and treatments.

About Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis (pronounced ana-fill-ax-is) is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction characteristically affecting more than one body system such as the airways, heart, circulation, gut and skin. Symptoms can start within seconds or minutes of exposure to the food or substance an individual is allergic to and usually will progress rapidly.
