Alliance Councillor Patrick Clarke Calls For Castlewellan Pedestrian Crossing

Alliance Councillor Patrick Clarke has urged Roads Service to consider the provision of a pedestrian crossing and traffic calming measures on the Main Street in Castlewellan between the Market House and Maginns Bar.

dn_screenCouncillor Clarke is concerned over the number of people who have difficulty crossing the busy Main Street to access shops due to parked cars and the busy volume of traffic.

He said: “I have again raised my concerns with Roads Service as to the need and provision of a pedestrian crossing along Main Street to allow people to cross the very busy main street in safety.

For some time this part of main street near both the Castlewellan Market House and the entrance into Castle Avenue leading into Castlewellan Forest Park has been a dangerous place for people trying to cross with the fast flow of traffic.

Due to the high volume of traffic entering and leaving Castlewellan the nearest pedestrian crossing is at Ulster Bank in the middle of Castlewellan which is some distance away for people wanting to cross near the Castlewellan Market House.

There have been recently a number of pedestrians injured trying to cross the Main Street at this location near Castlewellan Market House due to both the number of parked cars and the volume of traffic. Over the Christmas holidays another pedestrian was also injured.

I have therefore asked Roads Service to carry out investigations as to the possibility of the provision of a pedestrian crossing as well as any other traffic calming measures between Castlewellan Market House and Maginn’s Bar.”
