Alliance Councillor Patrick Clarke has again raised the issue of traffic calming measures for the Clarkhill Road just outside Castlewellan following ongoing concerns received by local residents regarding speeding traffic.

I have again raised the matter with Traffic Management Section of Roads Service to review. “Previously Roads Service reviewed this location on several occasions for possible traffic calming measures since it was first brought to their attention back in May 2001 with the last assessment / review being completed during February 2013 which again indicates that a traffic calming scheme for Clarkhill Road regrettably continues to be a low priority in comparison to other schemes currently under consideration in the Down Council Area. “However, Roads Service have advised me that this location will again be reviewed later this year within their Traffic Calming Annual Review of all outstanding requests in the Down Area. All aspects and factors of their assessment process are considered should circumstances have significantly changed since their latest review. The outcome of further reviews and processes will determine future programmes of work in the Down Council Area.” “Roads Service are very aware of the concerns raised by me on behalf of my constituents regarding the speed of traffic within this area. However, if motorists are not complying with the existing speed limit and driving in an irresponsible manner, then the local PSNI should be informed immediately as they are ultimately responsible for the enforcement of such restrictions.”
