Alliance welcomes opportunity for Strangford Road road safety review
Alliance representative Patrick Brown MLA has welcomed news from the Department of Infrstructure (DFI) that the Strangford Road could be subject to a safety review.
There have been a number of requests for improved road safety in the area recently.
The South Down Alliance MLA said: “My office has made requests to the DfI for a review of speed limits on the Mearne Road and Strangford Road, after constituents raised concerns regarding speeding on these roads.
“Unfortunately, DfI have said that Mearne Road itself would not meet
the criteria for a speed limit review due to it being less developed and more lightly trafficked in comparison to other roads in the area, classing it as a rural setting.”
Mr Brown added: “However, I was pleased to hear that DfI will be carrying out fresh
assessments of the speed limit on the Strangford Road, as part of their plans to assess a
number of speed limits in the area.
“Levels of increased development on the Strangford Road have made it eligible for a speed limit review.
“I am pleased to hear that the Department will be carrying out this assessment to prioritise safety on a busy and important road in our area.
“I look forward to hearing from them in the coming months, and will continue to lobby for improved road safety across the South Down area.”
