Speaking at the event, Councillor Casey said: “I want to congratulate the O’Rahilly’s team for achieving the title of All Ireland Hurling Champions at the recent matches in Cork. This is something you should be extremely proud of.

“I have no doubt you have trained exceptionally hard to achieve this win, showing talent, dedication and commitment. I can only guess at the many weeks and months of hard work you have put into your training schedule. You surely have a talent for your sport, but talent alone does not win major competitions… it is the hard work of each one of you that has combined to make a hugely successful team.

“The Castlewellan and Laoitroim GAA Clubs deserve recognition for the vital contribution they make to the local community, with their inclusive yet competitive nature.

“The Council has an objective of supporting improved health and wellbeing outcomes, which could not be achieved without sports clubs such as your team, to develop and deliver sporting experiences in order that our citizens can enjoy an active lifestyle, competing in whichever type of sport suits their strengths.

“We feel it is important that we acknowledge the high level of sporting performance and achievements of our local sports teams and I wish to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all who participated. You should all be very proud of your performances in such a historic match, as I know the Council and our community are very proud of each and everyone of you.

‘This reception is all about you: a celebration of your win; recognition of your sporting talents; and a thank you to your manager, your coaches and all who have mentored you.

“I wish you all continued sporting successes.”
