Housing Executive consults on draft Irish Traveller Accommodation Strategy
A new public consultation has been launched by the Housing Executive on its draft Irish Traveller Accommodation Strategy.
Outlining the organisation’s approach to improving accommodation outcomes for Irish Travellers, the draft strategy will run until 2031 and the twelve-week, public consultation finishes on September 28th, 2026.
Interested parties can give their views on the Consultations section of the Housing Executive’s website at nihe.gov.uk/working-with-us/partners/consultations
Four key areas are a major focus for the draft strategy, namely;
- Understanding accommodation needs
- Providing appropriate accommodation sites
- Embedding effective communication and supporting good relations
- Strengthening the evidence base through collaboration and research
David Glasgow, Irish Traveller Policy and Delivery Manager at the Housing Executive, said: “In 2003, the strategic role and responsibility for the provision of accommodation for Irish Travellers was transferred from local District Councils to the Housing Executive.
“This twelve‑week, public consultation offers an important opportunity for Irish Travellers, stakeholders and the wider public to help shape the future of Irish Traveller accommodation in Northern Ireland.
“We encourage everyone with an interest in this issue to share their views and help us develop a Strategy that supports safe, sustainable and culturally appropriate accommodation, while promoting equality, inclusion and good relations.
“The draft strategy recognises that addressing Irish Traveller accommodation needs is complex and requires partnership working, sustained engagement and a strong focus on delivery.
“We can assure members of the public, partners and stakeholders that taking part in the consultation and sharing their views will help shape the final strategy and inform future actions.”
