Devlin welcomes disability access for boats at Newcastle harbour
Mournes’ SDLP Councillor Laura Devlin has spoken out after the Economy Regeneration and Tourism Committee of Newry Mourne Down District Council approved the provision of disability access to boats at Newcastle Harbour at the meeting on Monday evening.
Cllr Devlin said: “Back in February I hosted a meeting with Harbour users and Council Officers during which many proposals were pitched for the first time. These included the need for the boats at the harbour to be accessible for those with disabilities. Something in this day and age which should be taken as a given.
“Officers agreed to go away and work up plans and proposals for a pontoon that would allow those with disabilities to get access down onto a boat or yacht. I want to thank both Andy and Michelle for their time in facilitating this piece of work.
“I am delighted that the Committee approved this Officer recommendation on Monday night.
“Everybody – no matter their age, gender, race, religion or disability should have equal access to services and facilities. We live in such an amazing location and there is something extra special about the harbour with the backdrop of the Mournes. So for this to be an option for all is only right and proper.”
Cllr Devlin added: “I look forward to this decision being ratified at full Council in November and the access in place as soon as.“
