The District Electoral Areas of Downpatrick, Rowallane and Slieve Croob in partnership with the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust organised a series of creative pottery sessions for adult carers at Preaching House Pottery based in Killough.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, carers have experienced a marked increase in their isolation as vulnerable family members have been required to shield. Preaching House Pottery owner and local artist Peter Surginor guided participants through the process of creating their own ceramic plaques which they were able to take home at the end of the sessions.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Cathy Mason said: “I am delighted that the DEA’s and the Trust, in association with Preaching House Pottery, developed this much needed project.

“Participants have enjoyed the opportunity to have some time away from their caring role, engage with others, decompress, and enjoy the satisfaction of producing a keepsake piece of pottery at the end of their sessions.”

The series of pottery sessions organised with Preaching House Pottery, were designed to enable carers to engage in therapeutic crafts, learn new ceramic making skills and provide an opportunity for socialising with others, while taking a much-needed break from their caring responsibilities.
