South Down MLAs have welcomed progress on the Narrow Water Bridge.

Sinead Bradley MLA (SDLP) has welcomed the announcement from An Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD, SDLP Minister Nichola Mallon MLA and Fianna Fáil Minister Darragh O’Brien TD green lighting the Narrow Water Bridge.

Sinead Bradley MLA said: “The SDLP has long championed the Narrow Water Bridge and now after decades of waiting in Government and working with the Irish Government, the SDLP’s Minister Nichola Mallon alongside An Taoiseach is taking the project forward.

Narrow Water Bridge has taken another major leap forward say MLAs.

“I am delighted that An Taoiseach will be funding this iconic project from the shared island unit. This vital funding will see the project brought forward to the next stages.

“This will be truly transformative for local people and for communities right across our island.

“Opening up connectivity and transforming our tourist offering, the iconic Narrow Water Bridge at long last has Ministers and political parties North and South not just willing but working to make it happen,” said Sinead Bradley.

Sinead Ennis MLA (Sinn Féin) said: “Progress toward the delivery of the Narrow Water Bridge project with funding committed by the Irish government is to be welcomed.

The fact that the Irish government have committed €3m to take the Narrow Water Bridge Project forward is positive news.

“Narrow Water bridge is a vital piece of all-island infrastructure which will transform the South Down area and is a commitment in the New Decade, New Approach agreement

“It will not only create jobs but it will also help attract more visitors and investment to the entire area.

“I look forward to more progress to come and will continue to work with both the Irish government and the Department of Infrastructure toward the delivery of this important project,” added Sinead Ennis.
