Council Thanks Residents and Volunteers Following Conclusion of Enhanced COVID-19 Testing in Kilkeel.
Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Cathy Mason has thanked all those who helped with the Public Health Agency’s recent COVID-19 testing operations in Kilkeel.
The Public Health Agency (PHA) announced today that it had concluded its enhanced testing work in Kilkeel, during which 2,100 residents participated. Examination of the data from before and during the enhanced testing reveals that since Monday 30 May, there have been 50 COVID-19 positive cases. Of these, 28 are probable or confirmed cases of the Delta variant (VOC-21APR-02, first detected in India).
The Council notes that the situation in the area is now stable and no additional public health interventions are required at present. However, the Council remains ready to assist the PHA again as required through its Emergency Planning structures.
Cllr Mason said: “The Council would firstly like to thank all the residents who stepped forward for testing. Your quick cooperation has helped the PHA in its critical work, and you have all played a part in slowing the spread of COVID-19.
“As well as other statutory partners, the Council was delighted by the response of community volunteers who assisted in reaching the targeted addresses so quickly. We know we have a wonderful base of community organisations in the Newry, Mourne and Down area and last weekend highlighted again how fortunate we are.
“The latest statistics remind us how important it is to keep following the COVID-19 public health guidance to help keep you and those you love safe. Continue with good hand hygiene, keep socially distancing, wear a face covering where necessary and keep rooms well ventilated. Don’t forget to make your vaccine appointment when offered a slot, and make sure you get your second dose.
“Get tested for COVID-19 when appropriate and self-isolate if you test positive for COVID-19 or are a close contact of a positive case.
“These measures will all help prevent the spread of COVID-19, including the Delta variant. I thank everyone for their efforts to date and ask that you remain vigilant over the coming weeks.”
